A State of Mind (11/28/04)

Happy Birthday to me! 🙂 Wow, am I 36? I can’t really say that I can’t believe that I’m 36. I’m well aware, painfully aware sometimes, of the number of years that I’ve been around. It’s just that I don’t feel 36. That is, of course, a good thing.

My wife asked me yesterday if I feel 36. I thought about it for a moment and admitted that I don’t. I’ve never felt my age, really. I certainly don’t act my age. I figure I’m probably about a decade behind, which is alright by me. I mean – there is going to be plenty of time to feel my age when I’m truly old.

There will be plenty of time for feeling old when I truly cannot enjoy anything in the world any longer. I can’t conceive of that ever happening, but if it does — well, I can be old then.

I’m not unhappy that I’m 36. I don’t think there’s a reason I should be. I’m getting older, yes, but all of us still here are doing just that. And I’m happy to count myself amongst that number.

So you really have to ask yourself – do you feel your age? If so, why? What is there you can do to get away from that feeling? It’s important for us all to remember that we’re lucky to be here. We’re lucky to have one another. We’re lucky to have all that we have. It could be far worse.

I want to encourage everyone to have some fun today. Laugh as much as you can today. Throw yourself into a hobby today. If you don’t have a hobby, find one – find several even. Talk with someone you love today. Talk with everyone you love today if you want. There is plenty of time to feel old. Today is not that day – and neither is tomorrow.

Get up and live your life. Do something positive for yourself – like quitting smoking or abusing some other life extinguishing habit. If you can’t let go of such habits for your own well being, then do so for those who love you. Don’t put your children and loved ones in the place my brother, mother, and myself were in a few months ago. Addiction is one thing, but you make the choice to be beaten by it every time you give in to it. YOU HAVE A CHOICE! Make the right one.

The bottom line is that it’s all right to grow old. You don’t have to play along with time, though. I’m not. I’m having too much fun.

Why don’t you join me?

Someone
…take your microphone
syawla
…take your microphone
Someone….

Born
with your back to the God that
Spit you out on the riverbed
Angry with who? Me?
You better back up fool
I bet you took a gun to school too
Now
Nobody’s takin’ your candy
You just keep on livin’ this tragedy

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

To each his own, but…

…I wait for you to take my hand
‘Cause we need each other
We gotta love each other
Yeah

Born
with your back to the God that
picked you up by your puppy scruff
Angry with who? Me?
You better back up fool
And be grateful that real me is always hiding from you
Now
Nobody’s takin’ your bicycle
Maybe somebody should take your microphone

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

To each his own, but…

…I wait for you to understand
That we need each other
We gotta love each other
(I wait for you to understand)
That we need each other
(I wait for you to take my hand)

Someone
Should take your microphone
Someone
Should leave other life alone
Someone
Could take your bubblegum
Someone
Could take your life and run

Always
Talkin’ always
And you’re always
Workin’ always

Try again
Lie again

If we don’t regret
That we don’t give love
That we don’t make up
That we don’t show love
That we don’t know love
Then we won’t know life

I wait for you to take my….
I wait for you to take my hand

Yeah
Cause we need each other
You know
We gotta love each other
Cause we need each other
Yeah
We gotta love
Gotta love each other
(This simple creed of love is what I follow)
We need each other
(I wait for you to understand)
We gotta love each other
(This simple creed of love is what I follow)
We need each other
(I wait for you to take my hand)
(This simple creed of love is what I follow)
We gotta love
Gotta love each other
